About
Shwe Kanbawza Self-Help Organization (SKBZ) was established in December 2010 in Pinlaung Township with five members. Since then, it has grown to 34 members. The organization consists of members from native ethnic groups of the area, including Pa’o, Shan, and Burma, who were all born and raised in the villages of Pinlaung Township. As natives, they have a deep understanding of the complex socio-economic and ethnic issues and are well-acquainted with the needs of the communities.
All founding members had previously worked in UNDP Human Development Initiatives and Process Led Integrated Community Development programs from 1997 to 2010. They are strongly committed to participatory democratic governance principles and value group work and initiatives. This commitment is demonstrated through the successful development activities undertaken by self-help affinity groups.
SKBZ is currently involved in various projects in Northern Shan State, specifically in Pinlaung areas, including Pinlaung, Hsihseng, Hpekon, and Nyaung Shwe townships. The projects focus on education, health, WASH Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, livelihood, and child protection through women’s empowerment, community-centered, and localization approaches. Presently, SKBZ is working to enhance the resiliency of both internally displaced people and host communities.
